WHAT IS THERMOTHERAPY?

Thermotherapy involves the application of Heat. The most common heating agent used in rehabilitation is a hot pack. Hot packs transfer their heat energy to the body by conduction. Superficial heat usually produces temperature elevation in the underlying tissues to a depth of up to 1cm. Adipose tissue acts as an insulating layer, which decreases the depth of heat.

EFFECTS OF THERMOTHERAPY :-

The aim of thermotherapy is to alter the tissue temperature of the targeted area to induce a desired Biological response. The increase in the temperature of the skin/soft Tissue leads to the

  • Increase in the blood flow by vasodilatation.
  • Increases the oxygen uptake thus increasing tissue healing
  • Increases the metabolic rate,
  • Increases tissue extensibility,

CONDITIONS TREATED.

· Joint.

· Strains and Sprains.

· Warming up stiff Muscles or Tissue before activity.

· Relieving pain or spasms relating to neck or back injury, including lower back, sub-acute or chronic traumatic and inflammatory conditions.

· Preheating before electrical stimulation.

What is heat treatment?

  • Heat treatment is the use of heat in various forms to treat various conditions. Heat is generally used for chronic (long term) injuries. Heat treatment can take several forms such as Hydrotherapy.

How does heat treatment help?

Heat increases blood flow to the area where heat is applied. This increases the supply of oxygen, proteins and nutrients to the area which will speed up repair. Heat treatment has several other benefits including:

  • Reduction in pain
  • Reduction in joint stiffness
  • Muscle relaxation
  • Increased flexibility
  • Reduced inflammation

HEAT THERAPY IN ARM PAIN

Heat is most helpful for warming stiff or soft scar tissue before stretching or exercising. Heat can also help relieve pain or cramps. Heat is a solution to provide long-term healing and relief from the pain of tennis elbow. Applying heat to your tennis elbow promotes the flow of blood.

HEAT THERAPY IN ELBOW PAIN

Heat is a solution to provide long-term healing and relief from the pain of tennis elbow. Applying heat to your tennis elbow promotes the flow of blood .Heat is most helpful for warming stiff or soft scar tissue before stretching or exercising. Heat can also help relieve pain or cramps.

HEAT THERAPY IN NECK PAIN

Heating pads can help relieve neck pain fast. Ice reduces inflammation, while heat relaxes stiff muscles. For best results, you may alternate the two for about 20 minutes several times a day.

HEAT THERAPY IN BACK PAIN

Heat therapy can help ease acute and chronic back pain. A person should apply heat to their back to help relax the muscles, reducing pain. Applying heat to the muscles can cause the blood vessels to dilate, improving circulation. This promotes the healing of any damaged muscle.

Who benefits from heat treatment?

Heat treatment can benefit a range of conditions by reducing pain and decreasing healing time. Heat treatment benefits conditions such as:

  • Muscle spasms
  • Back pain
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Contractures
  • Joint Pain
  • Chronic muscular pain

Key Aspects Of Heat Therapy

The key aspects of heat therapy within an overall Physiotherapy treatment are:

  • Heat can improve the flexibility of your tendons and ligaments
  • Heat will reduce muscle spasms
  • Heat may alleviate pain (heat may induce the release of endorphins, powerful opiate-like chemicals which block pain transmission.)
  • Heat will elevate blood flow (heat tends to relax the walls of blood vessels)
  • Heat will boost metabolism. Heat can help when stretching muscles and increasing overall flexibility.
